The 68th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was held in Adelaide, Australia, during 25-29 September 2017. It was organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and co-organized with the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and the local organizing Committee (LOC). The Theme of the 68th IAC 2017 was ¡°Unlocking Imagination, Fostering Innovation and Strengthening Security¡±.
The APSCO delegation led by the Secretary-General participated in the event. APSCO rented an exhibition booth to display the achievements and activities of APSCO and introduced the role and functions of APSCO to representatives from different governments, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, International space-related Organizations, Institutions, Universities, icons in the aero-space industry, leading space agencies and the visiting academicians, students and the general public. The exhibition was excellent and also was successful to attract variety of delegates to visit APSCO booth.
An interesting aspect was, that at APSCO Booth, a large number of visitors from all walks of life in Australia i.e. from government, Universities, academicians, veterans and students from Australia candidly expressed a strong inclination to join APSCO. They expressed a hope that now that Australian Space Agency has been announced during this IAC, further contact with APSCO would be facilitated for focused and meaningful talks. The prospects of cooperation were also explored with South African Space Agency, Universities, Space Generation Advisory Council and JAXA.
Dr. Li Xinjun, the Secretary-General of APSCO appeared in an exclusive interview with the Xinhua News Agency during the 68th International Astronautical Congress 2017. Dr. Li Xinjun stressed the importance of APSCO as a platform in space science and space application and showcased achievement on cultivating young generation in space science and technology fields among the Member States. He also expressed that APSCO, at its 10th Anniversary celebration in 2018, will reinvigorate the cooperation in the space sector and extend more benefits and share achievements with Member States.
The results of the Ka-Band Rain Attenuation Modeling Project of APSCO was presented in the Technical Session at the 68th IAC. Dr. Phunsak, the Project Lead from Thailand elaborated, the established well performing regional model, under this project framework. The verification results showed an even better performance than some of the existing ITU models to some extent. Also, many technical concerns during the process of Model establishment were deliberated, such as the physical consistence and over-fitting avoidance. The presentation was very successful and gained a good recognition. This was the first time, APSCO project results were published in the related international event. APSCO would continue to contribute project results in future events of international community.
During IAC, APSCO Secretariat attended CLIODN Committee IAC Meeting of the IAF and expressed interest to collaborate and maintain a long-term association and relationship with IAF as a Partner Organization.
