The Second Summer Camp of APSCO SSS Project is successfully completed

Training sessions of the Second Summer Camp activity continued during the third week. The week saw anamazıng openıng session with Attitude Control lecture and laboratory aiming on ADCS Micro-Simulator Hands-on Training, which were given by Iranian Professor Dr. Mehran Mirshams from K.N. Toosi University of Technology. The course started with an introduction of ADC system, and was followed by the test set up introduction and demonstration on ADCS Micro-Simulator. In the workshop assignment phase, participants were arranged into 8 groups and each group integrated and programed on ADCS Micro-Simulator, and further tested and justified for model attitude control, with the help of designed controller. Finally, all teams made result evaluation on the integrated model by themselves. The whole content of the course was highly favored and admired by all participants.

Later, on Wednesday, ¡°Satellite Attitude Determination Lecture¡± was given by post-doc system researcherDr. Ersin Söken from ISAS; ¡°Space Environment and Radiation Testing Lecture and Demonstration¡± was given by Prof.Dr. Bilge Demirköz from METU; ¡°Thermal Cycle Testing Demonstration¡± was given by Mr.Mustafa T¨¹rkmenoğlu from T¨¹BİTAK UZAY). The courses emphasized on the challenges for ADSs and solutions, ADS implementations with selection on hardware, attitude determination approaches, algorithms for satellite attitude determination; different aspects of the space environment, the production and acceleration of cosmic rays in the space radiation, micro-gravity and plasma environments; different attitude determination approaches, attitude determination from vector measurements and Kalman filtering for attitude estimation.

Beside the theoretical courses in class, the visit to the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency's Saraykoy Nuclear Research and Education Center, and the Gamma Radiation Facility was arranged, where a Co-60 source could be used for Total Ionizing Radiation tests and the Proton Accelerator Facility, for participants to help their on-site knowledge shaping.

Closing Ceremony

After three weeks of lectures, training, cultural interactions, and international cooperation, the Second Summer Camp of APSCO Student Small Satellite Project came to an end. In the afternoon of August 17, 2018, the grand Closing Ceremony was held in the Middle East Technical University (METU). Dr. Lokman Kuzu, the Director of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey-Space Technologies Research Institute (TUBITAK-UZAY), Dr. Mohammad Ebrahimi Seyedabadi, Director General of Department of Education, Training and Database Management of APSCO and Professor Ozen Techinalp of METU attended the ceremony.
Dr. Lokman Kuzu shared his views on space cooperation and emphasized the importance of the SSS Project and the Summer Camp Activity. He appreciated APSCO and METU for the success of the program and made suggestions on the next summer camp activity. Dr. Ebrahimi Seyedabadi deemed that the Second Summer Camp had been a great and complete success that achieved every single one of its goals and built a strong foundation for the future upcoming series of SSS activities. He highly complimented the efforts conducted by the participating students, teachers, lecturers, mentors, and volunteers from all APSCO Member States, TUBITAK-UZAY and METU. During his conclusion, he shared APSCO¡¯s vision for international multilateral cooperation in space education through continuous series of educational programs like SSS project. In the end, he expressed his sincere congratulations to everyone and wished everyone a bright future. Prof. Tekinalp shared his views about the summer camp program and wished the students had enjoyed the METU campus and hoped to meet the students again in other scientific platforms.
The students, lecturers, and volunteers received certificates of attendance and appreciation from APSCO and METU. Excellent students were appreciated with special certificates as well.

Epilogue¡ªAchievement and Significance

The Second Summer Camp of APSCO SSS Project followed the spirit of project feasibility study, and ideally designed by all project technical management team members from APSCO Member States. This activity concentrated on development of detailed technologies in the micro/nano satellite subsystems, which included the EPS, Tracking & Communications, ADCS, Structure & Mechanism, Thermal Control, and etc., and mainly focused on unit/subsystem manufacturing and testing hands-on trainings.
After 20 plus days concentrated training and valuable lessons, the Second APSCO SSS Project Summer Camp finally came to a successful close. Themed on test and integration of satellites, this summer camp had achieved plentiful and excellent results in promoting the development of aerospace technology and space education system among APSCO Member States and had been an enjoyable and memorable experience to the participants from universities of the Member States. Thanks to the lectures delivered by professors and experts from METU, TUBITAK-UZAY, China and Iran, students and faculty teams from Member States gained substantial benefits. Plenty of academic lectures about finite element method, power system of satellite, launch and space environment of satellites, experimental analysis of vibrating structures, attitude determination for small satellites etc. have been delivered by invited experts from China, Iran and Turkey. Meanwhile, a great many testing demonstrations on communication system, space environment and radiation were carried out in specialized laboratories at the facilities of METU, TAEK, and TUBITAK-UZAY. Beside the academic lectures and manual demonstrations, an ADCS Micro-Simulator hands-on training combined with workshop assignment further enhanced the training effect. Through this wonderful summer camp, the participants had not only obtained professional knowledge on the test and integration of satellites but also enhanced their technical capability on hands-on practice to design a satellite.
The Second Summer Camp had a great significance in the further development of the project and APSCO itself. It not only enabled the participants to enrich their professional knowledge on the test and integration of satellites as well as to enhance their practical ability to design a satellite by themselves; but also, it provided a good platform for the universities from APSCO Member States to undertake the student satellite design and development and to impart space technologies among the Member States through the SSS project as well as hands-on training program; moreover, it brought opportunity of the team working in hands-on training and the technical and cultural visits in Ankara provide great opportunities to the participants to know each other and to learn more about Turkey, which would make great contribution to promote the communication and friendship among APSCO Member States and thus to build a solid foundation for their deep and comprehensive cooperation in the future.
APSCO has considered a peaceful effort for the benefit of all people on Earth as a long-range objective and is obliged to hold the banner of pursuing excellence in education and research. As such, approaches to Asia-Pacific space integration are no longer limited to follow suit but to beef up cooperation in depth and breadth. APSCO is committed to common development through vigorous space cooperation and assistance to developing members in capacity building so as to ensure that no party is left behind by the tide of space development. This cooperation is sure to promote the rapid iteration, exploration and progress of the space industry. We have reasons to believe that flagship of Asia-pacific space development will embark on a course of smooth sailing toward common development, prosperity and progress of the Asia-Pacific region.
