International Training Course on ¡°Space-based technologies for emergency response mapping¡±

The Secretariat of APSCO organized the International Training Course on ¡°Space-based technologies for emergency response mapping¡± jointly with the National Disaster Reduction Center of China (NDRCC), UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER and Regional Center for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (China) (affiliated to the United Nations) from 28 October to 1 November, 2018 in Beijing, China. This training was an extended event back to back with the United Nations International Conference on Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction ¨C ¡°Space-based Technologies for Disaster Risk Reduction¡± which was organized from 24 to 26 October, 2018.
The opening ceremony of the Training was held in the Morning of October 28, 2018 at the Regional Centre for Space Science Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (RCSSTEAP) based in Beihang University and was attended and addressed by Dr. Mohammad Ebrahimi Seyedabadi, Director General of Department of Education and Database Management of APSCO, Dr. Shirish Ravan, Senior Programme Officer, UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, Dr. Li Suju, Research Fellow of National Disaster Reduction Centre of China (NDRCC) and Dr. Tan Yumin, Coordinator of Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia And the Pacific (RCSSTEAP) and Beihang University



The training programme is focusing on space based technology for emergency response. The experts from UN-SPIDER, Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT) of Delta State University, National Disaster Reduction Centre of China (NDRCC), Beihang University and International Water Management Institute (IWMI) are contributing to this hands-on training programme.
The training covered various topics such as Creating Maps for Emergency Responders; Satellite data sources for emergency response mapping; Study the extreme rainfall distribution based on rainfall frequency and return period calculation; MODIS flood mapping using IWMI flood mapping tool (IFMAN); SAR based flood mapping using (S1 data), case study on Sri Lanka 2017; UAV-based Remote Sensing: Application and Image Processing; Space-based technologies for Earthquake emergency response mapping-basic concepts and applications; Chinese Open-source Space Data and Products; Secondary disaster identification and analysis; Tents monitoring using high resolution images; Physical objects damage information extraction and loss assessment





A total of 40 participants from Bangladesh, China, Ghana, India, Iran, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Mozambique, Pakistan, Peru, Sudan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam attended this training course. They are mid-level managers and technical staff of agencies involved in disaster management and hazard mapping, disaster related educator, infrastructure developer, disaster forecasting and warning provider, disaster responder, natural resource manager including 15 participants from APSCO Member States and country partners of UN-SPIDER



The training course was successfully concluded on November 1, 2018. The participants taken part in the training session expressed their satisfaction over the content of the training course and spoke highly on the lecturers. Advises and suggestions are given for improvement of the contents, course objectives and teaching quality. And at the end of the closing ceremony, the course completion certificates have been awarded to the participants jointly by the Organizers.
